The Allegany County Teacher's Association believes that teachers who engage in effective professional development focus on eliminating the gaps in student learning while meeting the professional learning needs of colleagues. The NEA Urban Grant will allow the association the opportunity to develop a comprehensive professional development program that includes NEA resources such as KEYS and MegaSkills. The project will also provide mentoring for new teachers and an increased focus on community/family engagement.

The Cecil County Classroom Teachers Association will use the NEA Urban Grant to provide new teacher members (five years or less experience) with the opportunity to participate in self-directed professional development activities such as monthly "Chew and Chat" meetings and quarterly "Book Bonanzas" through which participants can discuss curriculum and teaching strategies and exchange ideas and resources.

The Howard County Education Association (HCEA) plans to use the 2004-2005 Urban Grant to initiate a project that will create focus group/organizing meetings to identify specific education reform/quality of work life goals for the Association. HCEA will work to achieve these goals through collaborative projects with the Howard County Public School System administration, training and activities targeted to Association reps and identified schools. As well as through the collective bargaining process and HCEA publications and the website.

The Lorain Education Association will use this grant to increase the reading and quality of literacy experiences of identified “at risk” students. The project will include seven first grade classes at Meister Road Elementary and Washington Elementary in the Lorain City School District. Senior volunteers will address the five areas of the Balanced Reading Program and student progress will be measured and assessed regularly.

As a result of Indiana Public Law 221, each building Quality Improvement Team (QIT) is required to collaboratively write a School Improvement Plan. The Fort Wayne Education Association will use the NEA Urban Grant to train members and administrators in a discussion process that will assist in building consensus to impact decision making. Fort Wayne Education Association will collaborate with the Fort Wayne Community Schools on this project.

In an effort to unite the Las Vegas Valley community to promote education, the Clark County Education Association with this NEA Urban Grant will provide opportunities to infuse multicultural and career education into the general curricula for the 72 association members and students at Mike O’Callaghan Middle School. The Cobb County Association of Educators recently became a Partner in Education with Brumby Elementary School through the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce. Brumby is a high priority school with a large bilingual population (Spanish and Portuguese). The grant will allow the Association to provide summer language experiences for ESOL students, ESOL parenting classes and other cultural activities to enhance the education experience of Brumby students and their families. This project will be conducted by a coalition with the Mexican American Legal Defense abd Education Fund and a coalition of CCEEA members and parents.

With the support of this NEA Urban Grant, the Memphis Education Association will build restructuring teams to assist low-performing schools through the restructuring process.
