25 Local Projects Win 2005-2006 NEA Urban Grants

Thirty-nine applications were received for the 2005-2006 grant year representing all six NEA regions and 27 states. A summary of each of the 25 winning projects is listed below by region. Take a look at some of the winners who were present at the annual fall banquet .

The Allegany County Teachers’ Association will use the NEA Urban Grant to fund the implementation of NEA’s SPARKS program. The program was developed for teachers who have six or fewer years experience and will be used to make a positive Association connection with newer, younger members.

The Canton Professional Educators Association (CPEA) will create a Collaborative Public Relations Committee that includes district unions, district administration and community partners.  Through the message that they are dedicated to providing high-quality education to all students with schools that are safe and staffed by caring, highly-qualified professionals, CPEA hopes to stabilize district enrollment, recruit and retain students, and strengthen key relationships with current, potential and future district families.  The NEA Urban Grant will be used to fund this effort in addition to funding from the CPEA Public Relations budget, OAPSE Union contributions, and others.

The Cecil County Classroom Teachers Association will use the NEA Urban Grant to implement a comprehensive member recruitment and professional development plan that targets new teacher hires within Cecil County.  Training will include the I Can Do It classroom management training as well as information sessions.

The Cumberland County Association of Educators will support inexperienced educators by assessing their needs and addressing them.  After surveying their needs, the Association will work collaboratively with the local school system and the community to ensure that their needs are met so that they are encouraged to remain in the teaching profession.

Fairfax Education Association (FEA) will use the NEA Urban Grant to offer MegaSkills training to teachers in struggling Title I schools.  MegaSkills is a character education program that integrates reading and writing skills into the regular classroom curriculum.  The program provides the FEA with a way to provide support to teachers who need strategies to effectively close the achievement gap.  This funding will help pay for training materials.

Bussing creates a split school community at Cochrane Elementary School.  The KEYS team has identified as the priority need to enhance school community relationships and parent involvment.  Jefferson County Teachers Association (JCTA) would like to create easier access to functions at schools and deepen family understanding of the content children are learning.  Using the NEA Urban Grant, JCTA will increase parent involvement through participation in a series of four School/Association sponsored Family Nights - Family Math Night, Family Reading Night, Family Health Promotions Night, and Family Science Night.  During these activities, families will receive activities aligned with the Kentucky Core Content that they can use at home.

Pitt County Association of Educators (PACE) has worked collaboratively with county leaders to provide outstanding professional development for their association members.  With funding from this NEA Urban Grant, PACE will further develop a professional library, provide support to National Board Candidates (NBC), and provide training for members who are serving as NBC leaders.  This training will develop leadership and mentoring skills, and assist in the recruitment and retention of local members.

The Schaumburg Education Association (SEA) will use the support of the NEA Urban Grant, in collaboration with Schaumburg School District 54, to enrich their current induction and mentor program.  Because it is vital to provide the necessary structures and training to ensure their future success as quality teachers and strong union advocates, SEA will offer necessary support to the 140 new teachers and 357 non-tenured teachers in their school district as well as the approximately 160 new teachers anticipated being hired over the next two years.

The Springfield Education Association (SEA) will use the NEA Urban Grant to reconnect with their membership through interviews and focus groups.  In partnership with the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce, they look to build a more strategic partnership with the Springfield business community, government and parents to overcome achievement gaps in their schools.  Also, in conjunction with the Teacher Union Reform Network, SEA will  maintain the Association's historical and traditional advocacy role on behalf of its members as well as focus the Association's identity on quality teaching and student achievement.

In East Hartford, there are few practical resources available to mentors to use when working with new teachers on the state's Beginning Educator Support and Training (BEST) program portfolio.  With this NEA Urban Grant, the East Hartford Education Association will pilot the Re-Tooling Mentors program, which will provide mentors with the support and training they need to work effectively with new teachers in their first two years of teaching.  The program also hopes to retain teachers as active mentors and build a stronger bond between new teachers and the local association.  This will result in them remaining in East Hartford and the profession, and later becoming active association members.

The Irvington Education Association, in conjunction with the Irvington Board of Education, will establish a satellite computer site for member training.  Since both teachers and educational support staff will be trained, a technologically skilled workforce will reap rewards in both the classroom and in the community.  The NEA Urban Grant will help with installation of the web site through which IEA will offer up-to-date information on local events and news as well as links to sites offering job-related courses, tutorials and testing requirements.

The Boise Education Association will use the NEA Urban Grant to fund a "Re-Ignite and Re-Energize Campaign" which will target educators with ten or more years in the profession.  Through this program, participants will be given a shared learning and bonding experience, and will encourage them to rekindle their passion for the association and for their profession.

Evergreen Education Association, in collaboration with Vancouver Education Association, will pilot a program that will re-engage and reinvigorate mid-career teachers.  Building on their success with the Sparks program, this new program will use the NEA Urban Grant to activate those members with seven to twenty years of experience who have not been engaged or had much exposure to their union.

This NEA Urban Grant will help with the development of a Leadership Development program for the Organization of DeKalb Educators (ODE).  This program will involve 40 to 50 members with leadership potential over the period of one year.  This grant will also help increase the number of Professional Development classes offered by ODE.  These opportunities would include subject-specific classes, study groups and meetings of teachers with common concerns.

The Sullivan County Education Association will provide leadership by launching a life skills program called New Directions.  New Directions focuses on a variety of life management issues from self esteem to dealing with violence and conflict.  Through this program, the Sullivan County Education Association will provide grade-appropriate materials and training to help teachers teach at-risk students coping skills for dealing with difficult behaviors.

Kids Cause provides for the unmet needs of students in the public schools of Utah County.  It is an organization directed by Alpine, Nebo and Provo Education Associations through Bonneville UniServ.  In addition to the funding from a partnership with United Way of Utah County, this NEA Urban Grant will support "Students Helping Students," a project to encourage Utah County public high school students to assist students in their school and their feeder schools.

Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA) will use the NEA Urban Grant to develop mechanisms for improving communication both internally and externally.  Methods will include introducing web-based tools and external public relations campaigns, while increasing their capacity internally through the development of an e-newsletter and enhancing current print publications.  Through this project, DCTA hopes to achieve greater organizing and mobilization, while building financial, technical, and political capacity to promote student achievement within Denver Public Schools.

The Granite Education Association will use the NEA Urban Grant funds to provide trainings geared specifically for secondary teachers, parents, patrons, educators, education support professionals, and school community councils on the importance of becoming involved in the political process and investing in Utah's public schools.  Emphasis will be placed on increased communication regarding what the national, state, and local affiliates are doing to secure funding for public education.

The Education Extravaganza is a community partnership activity coordinated by the Moore Association of Classroom Teachers.  This project contributes to restoring confidence in public education by building business partnerships.  We are working with the local chamber of commerce to grow our Adopt-A-School Program.  Efforts are enhanced through our Education Extravaganza event which serves as the connecting activity between business partners and school staff.  The NEA Urban Grant will help with communication, collaboration, and membership recruitment.

With the support of NEA Urban Grant funds, the NEA City Kansas Association will institute the NEA-KCK Teacher Survival Store.  This project is designed to provide beginning teachers and paraprofessionals supplies needed to set up their classrooms in an effort to maximize student learning.  This initiative will provide immediate support for teachers and paraprofessionals by providing networking opportunities and positive exposure to the Association.

Through the support of the NEA Urban Grant, the Peoria Education Association K-3 Colleagues in Collaboration Literacy Project will be implemented in the Program for Accelerated Literacy, English Language Learner and Special Education Programs at Sky View Elementary.  This project is designed to enhance reading, teaching, and learning and exhibits AEA's commitment to improving public education through strengthened professional development and collaboration for teachers and support staff.  It's main focus is to increase the reading achievement and motivation of all K-3 learners through use of the Three-Tier Reading and Response to Intervention (RTI) Model.

This NEA Urban Grant will be used by the Salt Lake Teachers Association to provide a program for the development and retention of educators through increased outreach, mentoring and professional development.  This project will have as its focus the betterment of the teaching profession by targeting a diverse body of potential educators at the middle school, high school, and college/university levels.  This project will also focus on keeping good teachers who have already committed to education as a profession by supporting the development of better district-wide mentoring behaviors.
