| The focus of this NEA Urban Grant is on professional women teachers and support personnel of the Allegany County Teachers’ Association (ACTA). The Association has researched the needs of its membership and has found that there is a great need to provide workshops for women that help build collaborative relationships among themselves and strengthen their roles of leadership in the Association. With the assistance of these NEA funds, ACTA will provide these workshops. |

It has become evident to the Pitt County Association of Educators (PACE) that the requirements of NCLB and other state legislation has created a great deal of stress and continues to negatively impact the moral of educators. With the support of this grant, PACE will provide its members with quality professional development and resources to help improve classroom instruction thus improving student achievement. Through their project, PACE will further develop its collaborative relationship with county leaders as well as continue the nurturing of their membership.

The Des Moines Education Association (DMEA) believes that to enhance its position as a local, state, and national leader in public education, the Association must increase its visibility, influence, and leverage. To assist in this effort, DMEA will use the NEA Urban Grant funds to develop, coordinate, and implement a new DMEA “presence” initiative. This initiative will be designed to create, coordinate, and implement multiple, varied, and complementary inter-committee “presence” activities and projects aimed at raising the Association’s internal and external visibility and influence.

The Lansing Schools Education Association (LSEA) will use their NEA Urban Grant funds to implement an evidence-based training program for teachers and parents providing scientifically proven methods to attain positive, productive classroom and home climates conducive to high student achievement and pro-social citizenship. The program facilitates collaboration, problem-solving and social support among groups of teachers and parents focusing on promoting children’s social skills, preventing behavior problems, and sustaining good learning habits from early elementary school forward.

In late summer of 2006, the Middle County CSD funded a district-wide pre-kindergarten program which lead to the hiring of new teachers to staff this program. The Middle County Teachers Association will use NEA’s Urban Grant funds to create and deliver a pre-kindergarten teacher/parent symposium to build a strong foundation of parent/ teacher cooperation and to promote student success. The Association will also link new teachers with a select cadre of experienced staff members to ensure their success and the growth of the Association.

The Parkland Education Association believes that positive communication is better fostered by developing learning communities outside of the school building for the purpose of education the community on topics of their immediate concern. With the support of these funds, the Parkland Education Association will sponsor informational sessions for the Parkland School District Community that will feature teacher led discussions on elementary, middle school, and high school topics. The sessions will offer a non-threatening environment where students and parents will receive information, ask questions, and become members of the learning community.

This NEA Urban Grant will assist with the development and initial implementation of the Rochester Teachers Association’s Future Leaders Institute. The goal of the Institute is to develop new leaders for the union, continue to professionalize the union, and promote the best educational practices for their teachers and students. The Association will collaborate with Cornell University School of Industrial Labor Relations, New York State United Teachers, NEA and AFT in the development of the curriculum for the Institute.
